GIG 296 : Pitchshifter / Cubanate – LA2, 22nd June 1996

I’d only been at LA2 the previous night for a gig, but was back down to central London for another outting – and also my fifth gig in consecutive days. Thankfully it was a Saturday so I could rest the next day (especially as I’d worked all week including today), but not until after we’d partied the night away at both this gig and then Slimelight clubbing until 5am! The joys of being young, eh?

I’d seen both Cubanate and Pitchshifter before (Cubanate four times, Pitchshifter only the once) but had enjoyed both of them and was keen on catching them again – with the bonus of getting to do so on the same bill.

Cubanate were unfortunately not as good as I’d seen them before. They were certainly not terrible, but I’d seen them put on some cracking performances in the past and this one just seemed a bit lacklustre. They were fine, but given the calibre of bands I’d seen over the last few days they fell at the bottom of the list with The Cardiacs from the previous evening.

Pitchshifter made up for them though. They put on what was probably the second best performance I’d seen in the last few days (possibly best – it would be a toss up between them and Puressence – two drastically different styles). They had blown me away when I saw them earlier in the year at Camden Palace (GIG 271) and, whilst not reaching the same heady heights of that night, were still incredibly good.
