#RPGaDAY2022 Day 8 – Who introduced you to RPGs?

Welcome to #RPGaDAY2022! Now in its ninth year, #RPGaDAY was originally created by RPG author and games designer David Chapman (Conspiracy X, Doctor Who, etc) as a bit of fun and to get people talking about tabletop roleplaying games. August was chosen, I believe, to coincide with tabletop roleplaying’s gaming mecca that is Gen Con – which usually takes place in the States (Inidanapolis these days) every August.

#RPGaDAY is open to everyone so if you want to join in just check out the prompts below to inspire a blog, vlog, or social media post to celebrate everything great about our hobby with the tag #RPGaDAY2022

Day 8 : Who introduced you to RPGs?

As mentioned back in Day 3’s post (When were you first introduced to RPGs?) I first played an RPG when I moved to the States back in 1984. My cousins were already roleplayers and on my second day there Jason ran a Dungeons & Dragons game for me and I was hooked.

I hadn’t actually heard of RPG’s before then. I had been playing Fighting Fantasy Adventure Gamebooks, and the Choose Your Own Adventure books, after being introduced to those a year or so earlier by a schoolfriend called Simon who was my best mate at primary school. Whilst those books certainly gave my the basic grounding they were solo game books and it hadn’t occurred to me that you could play a kind of open-ended group version of them.

I’m sure I’d have discovered RPGs if I’d stayed living in the UK, but moving to the States and having cousins who were already playing them certainly speeded things up a little.
