Edo – Shinobi

D&D 5th Ed / FATE compatible supplement by Yoru Creative Studio

EDO: VOLUME II — SHINOBI (SHADOW OPERATIVE • KEEPER OF SECRETS • THE ABSENT PRESENCE) is a system-agnostic and multi-framework TTRPG sourcebook presenting a historically grounded, playable character archetype for Japanese fantasy role-playing games. Rather than leaning into the romanticized theatrical tropes of the acrobatic assassin in black cloth, this supplement strips away the myth to reveal the true historical intelligence operative documented in the Bansenshukai (1676).

Calibrated for tactical subversion, this zine features ready-to-play rules supporting system-agnostic gameplay, the Fate Condensed engine, and a complete D&D 5e System Reference Document (SRD 5.1) Rogue subclass.

“The best shinobi is the one whose mission is never known to have occurred.”

The heart of the Shinobi archetype lies in a philosophy that prioritizes information over raw force, careful preparation over wild improvisation, and the pragmatic achievement of goals over the honor of their execution. Operating as intelligence gatherers, arsonists, and psychological operators, the Shinobi handles the messy, hidden infrastructure of war. This sets up a magnificent, productive tension with the traditional Samurai code. To a samurai, the Shinobi’s reliance on concealment, deception, and night strikes is fundamentally dishonorable. To the Shinobi, the samurai’s strict adherence to overt honor is a costly luxury that clients pay them to bypass completely.

Through the Bansenshukai traditions of the Iga and Koka regions, the archetype focuses heavily on deep social infiltration and practical toolsets. By mastering the “Five Disguises”—the traveling monk, itinerant performer, merchant, craftsman, and farmer—the Shinobi can seamlessly blend into any social stratum of Edo society. When combat becomes an absolute necessity, it is treated as a secondary risk, executed through quick, blinding distraction and lightning-fast lethal precision rather than a prolonged duel.

Key Features

  • Information Over Force: Play an operative whose ultimate asset is survival and who treats open steel-clashing combat as a symptom of a mission failure.
  • The Mastery of the Five Disguises: Infiltrate deep-cover positions by assuming the role of a monk, performer, merchant, craftsman, or farmer, unlocking tailored social access across all layers of the setting.
  • Practical Historical Gear: Forget theatrical tricks; utilize historical tools of the trade such as lockpicks, wall-scaling ropes, silent medicine pouches, and metsubushi (blinding powder) used purely as distractions.
  • System-Agnostic Attribute Block: Emphasizes a top-tier 5-rating in Concealment alongside 4-ratings in Agility, Perception, and Deception. Features signature abilities like Metsubushi deployment and the devastating Silent Kill trigger.
  • Fate Condensed Setup: Forge an existential crisis with aspects like I Have Been This Cover Identity For So Long I Am Not Certain Which One Is Real. Use the Information Network stunt to ask yes-or-no operational questions directly to the GM.
  • D&D 5e SRD Rogue Subclass: Unlock a complete, 5-tier Shadow Operative path beginning at 3rd level. Features disguise proficiencies, blinding bonus actions, shadow-step teleports, and the lethal 17th-level Death Touch feature.

Rogue Subclass Features (D&D 5e SRD)

  • 3rd Level – Five Disguises: Gain proficiency with the Disguise Kit and Forgery Kit. While executing one of up to 5 maintained prepared cover identities, you roll with advantage on all Deception checks to preserve your cover.
  • 3rd Level – Metsubushi: As a bonus action, hurl blinding powder at a creature within 10 feet. The target must fail a DC 14 Dexterity save or become blinded until the end of its next turn, taking disadvantage on its next attack roll.
  • 7th Level – Intelligence Network: Spend a long rest in a settlement to activate your network. You gain advantage on Investigation checks to uncover clues until your next long rest, and you can ask the DM one yes-or-no question per day to receive a perfectly accurate answer.
  • 10th Level – Shadow Step: Use a bonus action to teleport up to 30 feet into an unoccupied space of dim light or darkness that you can see, granting you the ability to immediately follow up with a lethal attack roll.
  • 17th Level – Death Touch: When delivering Sneak Attack damage to a target completely unaware of your presence, the target must pass a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or immediately drop to 0 hit points. On a success, they are still stunned until the end of their next turn.
