GIG 185: Stiltskin / Sulphur – The Underworld, 10th October 1994

In the 80’s and 90’s Levi adverts were big business musically. Many of the songs they featured hit the higher end of the charts. Classics such as Ben E Kings “Stand By Me” and Marvin Gaye’s ” I Heard It Through The Grapevine” as well as new (or brand new) artists such as Smoke City’s “Underwater Love”, Babylon Zoo’s “Spaceman” and Stiltskin’s “Inside”. It was the Levi advert that introduced us, along with the majority of the country, to Stiltskin. I had the album and remember quite liking it so we grabbed tickets to see them live at The Underworld.

…and they were actually really good live.

Although pretty much a one hit wonder, the album had a number of good songs on it and I think they probably played the entire thing live. For a band that was put together to record the “Levi’s commercial song” it could have been very different, so getting a full album of decent tracks was an achievement.

Unfortunately Stiltskin was relatively short-lived, with the debut album also being their only album. So it was pretty lucky we got to see them in that window. Ray Wilson (the singer) eventually joined Genesis to replace Phil Collins for an album and a tour.
