Back to a familiar venue with a new name. At somepoint during 1993 Kentish Town’s Town & Country Club was renamed The Forum. The last ever Town & Country gig was by Van Morrison on 21st March 1993, after which The Mean Fiddler Group brought the venue and changed it’s name to what the venue is still known by today (although these days it’s the O2 Forum since Live Nation brought it back in 2015).
In anycase, it was Saturday night and myself and Sue headed into Kentish Town to see The Austalian Doors Show. One of the many ‘covers’ bands that were doing pretty well playing decent sized venues playing the music of long gone groups, giving the chance for new crowds to discover the live experience of classic tracks that we’d only ever heard live on recordings from decades before. I, probably like many kids growing up in the 80’s, was a huge Doors fan. I had albums, Jim Morrison poetry books, a poster on the bedroom wall as well as song lyrics I’d written out and pinned to the wall. The Doors were pretty influential on a young Angus, and many of their tracks still invoke memories and emotions today. Indeed, I posted up ‘The End’ by The Doors as my final farewell post when I left my old company, Cubicle 7, back in December 2011.
I can remember nothing of the support band, The Big Truth Band. My notes indicate they were ‘ok’ but certainly didn’t set my world on fire. The Australian Doors, however, were amazing. Classic track, after track, and the band looked and sounded perfect. I, luckily, managed to catch them again a couple of later (more of that when I get to 1995) and am so pleased I did.
