This was my first gig of 1990, a new decade, and a great way to launch what was going to be a very intense ten years of live music for me. MY co-conspirators for the night were Nick, Donna, Adam, Rachel and Steve.
I’m not sure why it had taken me so long to see Creaming Jesus again. I’d seen them back in May ’89 supporting Dawn After Dark (GIG 015) and they had blown everyone else off the stage that night. I already owned a bunch of their EPs on vinyl and had been very eager to catch them live for some time.
Creaming Jesus didn’t disappoint one bit, once again blowing me away. Andy’s vocals and two drummers plus a drum machine helping produce a sonic wall. Their blend of goth meets thrash, via punk, and combination of some great self penned tracks and blistering covers of The Cure’s “A Forest” and a tongue in cheek cover of The Sisters of Mercy “Temple of Love” all resulting in an incredibly energetic and sweaty January evening.
Scat Opera were so-so and Chunk were pretty good.
