Nickolai Gaunt, a war hero, is on his deathbed. His body is slowly wasting away, and the healers can do nothing about it. It’s believed that some internal malady – perhaps a demonic possession – is to blame. If he dies with this demon possessing him, his soul could be lost forever.
The kingdom that Nickolai served is not willing to let evil prevail so easily, however. They’ve hired a group of adventurers – the PCs– to enter Nickolai’s mind through the use of a modified dream spell. Here, the party will free Nickolai of the demons that haunt him, saving his soul and allowing him to move on in peace.
Inside his mind, the PCs will work their way through Nickolai’s memories – both good and bad – to see how he became the man he is. Nickolai’s history cannot be detailed here, however, as the PCs’ successes and failures will “determine” what happened in the past. When all is said and done, the real “demon” will be revealed.
