Introduction

This project has been a long time coming. The West Warwick Public Library Press has been publishing fiction anthologies since 2020 with five titles to date, but Wicked Good Adventures is different. I have two great loves in my career as a programming librarian: writing programs and tabletop roleplaying games. I am incredibly privileged to have had a part in finally bringing them together in the weird, brilliant, beautiful patchwork monster that is this book.

The people who brought Wicked Good Adventures to life put in an enormous amount of effort, care, and heart. They learned new skills, new game systems, and new styles. They wrote, rewrote, sketched, and revised—all under grueling deadlines—and they did it while supporting each other. Two dozen editors, writers, artists, play testers, and technical specialists took a $7,300 grant from the Rhode Island Office of Library Services and turned it into art. In four months. That’s the power of community. That’s the power of libraries. That’s the power of people loving something together so hard it brings something new into the world.

Wicked Good Adventures is the distillation of the West Warwick Public Library’s gaming community, and it is completely human-made. Every writer and editor in this book keeps gaming alive at the WWPL as volunteer Game Masters, players, donors, and as people who love weird stories, silly stories, scary stories, and—most importantly—human stories. That’s what an RPG is: a story you tell with people who have the courage to share a little bit of themselves with the table.

So take what they’ve offered and add a little of yourself to the story. Share it with your friends and invite them to share themselves with it. Keep making stories. Make stories bigger than yourself. Make them weird, funny, ridiculous. Make them angry, scary, powerful. Make them honest. Don’t stop playing make-believe until the party has adopted a pet monster, the healer’s burned their last spell slot fighting the dragon, and your neighbors are banging on the walls yelling for you to keep it down, And then play again.

After all, old adventurers never die. They just roll a new character.
