Traveler’s Adventures – The Slow Bell of Kressa Vale

Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition Scenario by Muqarnas Games

“THE AFFLICTION MOVING THROUGH KRESSA VALE DOES NOT KILL ANYONE. IT SIMPLY, PATIENTLY, MAKES EACH VICTIM FORGET ONE MORE PERSON THEY LOVE EVERY SINGLE DAY, UNTIL THE LAST NAME IS GONE AND THE BODY, APPARENTLY SATISFIED, FINALLY ALLOWS ITS OWNER TO REMEMBER HOW TO DIE.”

Following the release of The Cartographer’s DebtThe Slow Bell of Kressa Vale is a self-contained, 11th to 13th level one-shot adventure designed for 3 to 5 characters, built to run in a single four-to-five-hour session. It turns its gaze from dimensional gaps to an emotional, high-level supernatural mystery where profound ancient grief, relationship erasure, and compassionate resolution take center stage over standard monster hunting.

By shifting the primary conflict away from a conventional disease or a malicious villain, this module focuses on an ancient, wounded guardian entity (The Warden) trapped within a sealed bell tower. Having lost its original community in a catastrophic night generations ago, the Warden’s unresolved sorrow involuntarily bleeds outward as its magical seal deteriorates, replicating its own tragic loss across Kressa Vale’s current population. This presents a deeply narrative, investigative, and empathetic challenge. Perfect for running a settlement-wide medical and historical investigation, managing high-stakes emotional loss, or facilitating a collaborative effort to help an ancient entity find healing and release, The Slow Bell of Kressa Vale gives your table an environment where historical research, emotional sophistication, and genuine empathy carry far more weight than simple combat.

Module Features:

  • The Memory Erasure Framework: Investigate the settlement of Kressa Vale, where a creeping affliction called the Slow Bell strips away one cherished relationship’s worth of memory per day from its victims before peaceful death follows.
  • The Grieving Guardian Antagonist: Discover that the source of the affliction is The Warden, a centuries-old guardian spirit whose ancient, catastrophic loss of its original community bleeds through a deteriorating seal, unintentionally inflicting its own grief on current residents.
  • Clinical & Historical Investigation: Work alongside local healer Orin Vask to observe the affliction’s stages, chart its correlation with the valley’s population growth, and uncover regional records detailing the ancient disaster.
  • Empathy-Driven Resolution Climax: Breach the sealed bell tower in Act Three to engage the Warden directly, using historical context and emotional connection to help it distinguish past loss from present reality, honor its fallen people, and find lasting peace or renewed purpose.
  • Ready-to-Play Handouts & NPC Seeds: Features complete NPC profiles (including local healer Orin Vask and the Warden), structured XP awards, specific treasure rewards, and printable player handouts containing local bell tower folklore and regional historical accounts of the ancient calamity.
