Edo – Kaisen

D&D 5th Ed / FATE compatible supplement by Yoru Creative Studio

EDO: VOLUME V — KAISEN (MERCHANT SAILOR • CROSSROADS OF SEAS • KEEPER OF ROUTES) is a system-agnostic and multi-framework TTRPG character class sourcebook presenting a highly mobile, playable commoner archetype for Japanese fantasy role-playing games. Far from a simple aesthetic reskin of a standard seafaring background, this supplement introduces a class of elite maritime professionals whose wealth, connections, and geographical mobility made them the real intelligence network running right beneath the surface of the country.

Grounded in the real historical logistics of the Tokugawa era’s coastal shipping lines, this volume contains ready-to-play rulesets for system-agnostic mechanics, the Fate Condensed engine, and a complete D&D 5e System Reference Document (SRD 5.1) Rogue subclass.

“She had sailed the route from Osaka to Edo forty times. She knew every harbour master, every dangerous current, every magistrate who could be reasoned with and every one who could not. This was not a small knowledge.”

The heart of the Kaisen archetype lies in the profound paradox of the Edo period’s social hierarchy. While the formal system placed samurai at the apex and common merchants at the very bottom, the practical reality of moving goods across Japan’s islands heavily relied on the sea. Information, massive rice distributions, and black-market luxury goods traveled along coastlines in ways the land-locked samurai class could heavily tax but never fully control. This gave Kaisen crews a unique, practical authority. A captain who knew the exact price of rice in three separate ports, understood the seasonal winds of the Kitamaebune route, and maintained private agreements with local harbor masters held more practical power than most lesser lords.

This sets up an incredible utility at the gaming table. Where other characters rely on raw physical force or esoteric spells, the Kaisen operates through an unmatched net of contacts, economic leverage, and hard-earned survival instincts. Armed with highly unglamorous but lethal weapons like short swords and boat hooks, they are built to negotiate out-of-hand crises, spot official corruption before it snaps shut, and safely guide the party through deep waters that would reduce more sheltered archetypes to pure helplessness.

Rogue Subclass Features (D&D 5e SRD)

  • 3rd Level – The Route: You define your primary trading network. Choose five distinct ports or settlements. While inside any of these locations, you gain advantage on all Persuasion and Investigation checks, and you automatically track one local NPC contact who is actively willing to protect or assist you.
  • 3rd Level – Maritime Expertise: You gain native proficiency with Navigator’s Tools and water vehicles. You automatically succeed on all ability checks related to sailing, navigation, or weather diagnostics in any body of water you have traveled before.
  • 7th Level – Trade Intelligence: Spend a long rest gathering street clues inside a settlement and roll an Investigation check (DC 12). On a success, you instantly uncover the exact local political situation, log the single most valuable trade commodity in the sector, and catch one active secret circulating through the merchant underground.
  • 10th Level – Expand the Route: Your primary trade network expands to cover ten specific locations. Additionally, when entering any foreign settlement along a major trade route, you can attempt a DC 14 Charisma check to instantly flag down a sympathetic sailor, turning them into a temporary contact for the session.
  • 15th Level – Maritime Command: Add your full proficiency bonus to all checks made to command a waterborne vessel. Once per long rest, you can execute a sudden maritime maneuver, forcing the vessel to automatically pass its next navigation check regardless of extreme storms or treacherous shoals.
  • 17th Level – The Network: Your information lines span the entire campaign map. Once per session, you can ask the DM a direct question regarding any active person, hidden location, or brewing plot development in the world to receive a perfectly accurate answer.
