Immortals: Hubris & Glory

Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition Campaign Setting by Black Lantern

A Dark Spin on Ancient Greece!

What is IMMORTALS?

Immortals: Hubris & Glory is a campaign setting set in a grim imagining of mythical ancient Greece, based on the 5e system with a number of dynamic changes unique to the setting.

There is no greater purpose for a Greek than to achieve immortality through his or her deeds. But beware, the path to heroic pantheon is strewn with thorns, steel, fire and blood. Slay beasts of myth, wretched servants of the Titans, and wrestle against the ire of the Gods in your quest for eternity.

But beware – the Olympians are jealous Gods, they don’t share power, neither with the mighty Titans, nor with the ambitious mortals seeking to rise above their station.

Why pick IMMORTALS?

The book features a number of innovations meant to keep 5e fresh, as well as new options for existing parts of 5e.

A New Magic System

Immortals offers a completely new magic system using aether, the breath of the Gods. This invisible element allows mages to cast a slew of new and potent spells inspired by Greek myth.

The system does away with spell slots, chaotic tables and spell levels, replacing them with spellcasting DC, which tests a mage’s mettle whenever they cast a spell. They can enhance their efforts through aether points, representing their innate reserves of power. Lastly, a wide array of new spell tags have been introduced, similar to 5e’s iconic (ritual) tag, presenting alternative ways to cast spells, including prayers, philtra, and more!

Hubris and Glory

Secondly, the Hubris and Glory systems are two of the lynchpins of the gameplay of Immortals.

Hubris is a system that allows you to enhance certain abilities, as well as your own prowess in battle in various ways, by committing acts of hubris that displease the Gods. However, if you do this too much, the accumulation of Hubris will draw the wrath of the Gods.

Glory, inversely, is a system that rewards you for heroic deeds, such as the slaying of mighty foes or the restoring of sacred sites. As you gain Glory, you get closer and closer to hysterophemia – posthumous fame, which is a universal goal of all who live in the dire, grim world of mythic Greece.

Traveling and Seafaring Systems

Exploration and travelling is a core component of adventuring in Immortals. The book includes all-new systems designed to enhance your journeys across Greece, on foot or by ship.

Adventure After Death

Death is not the end of all things. In Immortals, as in ancient Greece, it is possible for a hero to return from the dead if the circumstances allow it. Venture into the depths of Hades to rescue a treasured companion, or seek the way out yourself through a series of trials and tribulations.

Divine Favor and Ire System

Gods are instrumental to the world of Immortals. Worshiping the divines has certain perks, while disrespecting them incurs their ire, often with fatal consequences. Each God has an array of boons that, if their Favor is won, can be taken by players, granting their characters great and unique powers.

The Races

There are six playable races in IMMORTALS.

  • The ambitious Humans, builders of civilizations. The most short-lived of the races, they are also the most flexible and adaptable, endowed with limitless potential.
  • The proud Centaurs, once rulers of the wilds. These proud warriors have seen the wilds menaced by horrors from the depths of Tartarus, and took up arms in the land’s defense.
  • The crafty Hephaestians, children of fire and magma. These master artisans were forged by Hephaestus and descended from Pandora. A doomed people, they hope to keep their legend alive through their wondrous works.
  • The elusive Tartarians, whose lineage hails from the Titans. Shunned and exiled, these wanderers seek glory to allay the wounds wrought by a society that never trusted them.
  • The enchanting Nymphs, who protect the wild places of the world from harm. Gifted with ethereal beauty and longevity, they seek to preserve nature, especially their sanctuaries.
  • The mischievous Satyrs, perennial pranksters and mystics. These spirits of nature are eager to be remembered, though more than anything they want to leave behind a world worth being remembered in.

The Classes

Immortals includes 20+ new subclasses designed with passion and love towards Greek history and mythology, as well as the all-new Magos class, a spellcaster that uses aether to cast magic.

Some of the subclasses of Immortals include:

  • The Polemarch, a barbarian subclass that combines savage fury with tactical cunning.
  • The Oracle, a cleric subclass that focuses on interpreting the will of the fates.
  • The Myrmidon, a fighter subclass that uses intricate maneuvers in battle, showcasing their supreme skill at arms.
  • The Rhapsode, a bard subclass that uses epic poetry to set their allies’ hearts aflame with burning inspiration.

New Backgrounds

Mix and match from a combination of personal, racial and class backgrounds to create the ideal origin for your character. Each background offers different options depending how you want to portray your character.

New Feats and Magic Items

An extensive array of feats and magic items is introduced, including heroic feats and items that grow in power as your legend grows.

An All-Encompassing Experience

All these features, on top of a bleak-yet-colorful setting oozing with dark atmosphere, await. The Second Titanomachy has begun. The Ruin of Olympus looms. Tartarus has spilled out into the world, and the future looks dire. Heroes are called to pick up their arms, don their helmets, and step forth to contend with destiny.
