Improvements in the New Edition

Recreating the Bounty Board Random Table

Among the many improvements in the new edition of The Great Book of Random Tables, the Bounty Board table has been completely rewritten and expanded to 200 entries.

Here’s an example: The Great Book of Random Tables: First Edition

  • Tyjan Rames, Wanted Dead or Alive: Accidentally massacred a town
  • Artina Skil, Wanted Dead or Alive: Scammed a man out of his horse
  • Gary, Wanted Dead: He deserves it
  • Indigo Callan, Wanted Dead or Alive: Robbed a trade caravan

Now, here is an example of the updated tables: The Great Book of Random Tables: Second Edition

  • Osmar York | Bounty: 160gp | Wanted Status: Alive or Dead | Crime: Burglary
  • Borck Hammerstring | Bounty: 120gp | Wanted Status: Alive or Dead | Crime: Cattle rustling
  • Elton Flen | Bounty: 4sp | Wanted Status: Alive | Crime: Keeping a dangerous bull
  • Flint Saunderson | Bounty: 130gp | Wanted Status: Alive | Crime: Smuggling

As you can see, the names were improved, bounty prices were added, and crimes were cleaned up and made realistic. Also, odd crimes from the Middle Ages were added for a touch of humor.

Here’s another example from the Underground Encounters table.

First Edition

  • Two dwarves carrying an injured elf
  • Natural cave-in
  • Book (roll once on a Book Title Table)
  • Thousands of eyes peering from the darkness
  • Injured dog

Second Edition

  • Armed dwarves have barricaded the passage up ahead. They demand to know the party’s business. If not told, they order the party to turn around and leave (1d10)
  • Suddenly, a rush of wind brings thick dust into the passage, making it difficult to breathe
  • An extremely tall and thin man carries a bag of gems and rare metals. He wishes to press on and not delay by speaking with the party
  • A civilization of tiny burrowing creatures has erected temples and monuments that stand only a few feet tall but are intricate and elaborate
  • A cheerful man says he’s traveling to an underground city. Nothing will stop him from plunging deeper underground
