The Fire Burns Low is level-less, class-less rpg set in a dark fantasy world one part familiar, two parts fable and nightmare.

You trade. You bargain.

You Experiment with magic.
You survive the Wilds but not unscathed.
And when the time comes, you may choose death.

You play mortals confined to a known world. There is safety behind walls. Outside them, there be monsters.

There are two worlds:

• The Mortal World:  structured, familiar, ruled by law and memory.
• The Immortal Wild: ancient, alien, mind-bending. Once visited, it marks you forever.

The Fire Burns Low is a game about crossing that line. You are stranger in a once familiar land. Your companions are kindred spirits.

System

Fire Burns Low is a d6 system where there are two methods of overcoming a challenge:

1. Only you are involved: roll at or under your ability score

2. You roll opposed: Roll one to four dice against an opponent and hope for a higher roll.

Otherwise, the system leans into customization and the weight of player choice.

• The system is level-less, focused on identity, and change.
• Characters are customizeable but there are plenty of templates to choose from.
• Skills, spells, and marks define who you are.
• Marks are supernatural changes your character has undergone. They are gained through bargains and influence. Magic always has a cost. Essentially, anything magic about your character, including what your carry, marks you.
• Combat is fast, dangerous, and decisive. High risk, high reward.
• Spells bear the risk of unintended effects. Nothing is free of consequence.
• Character growth comes through trade, corruption, sacrifice, and survival.

There are no classes in the traditional sense. There are two archetypes: Warrior or Magician. Your choice simply defines whether or not you cast spells.
