GIG 342: Paradise Lost / The Dawn – Astoria, 13th July 1997

Fresh from a weekend in Oxford I managed to get back to London in time for Sunday evenings planned entertainment – Paradise Lost at The Astoria. I’d seen Paradise Lost back in 1994 (GIG 180) when I hadn’t known them (I was at that one for the support band – Die Krupps) and wasn’t really keen on them. In the intervening years they had released there ‘Draconian Times’ album in 1995 which I really liked so when I saw they were playing London I grabbed some tickets.

I was accompanied my my flatmate, Jess, and her boyfriend and we got there nice and early to see the support band – The Dawn. Unfortunately they weren’t great – they were ok, but didn’t get the adrenaline pumping.

Thankfully Paradise Lost were on form. Whilst I had not enjoyed them when I originally saw them a few years before tonight was a different matter. They rocked and and put on a great show. Very pleased I managed to catch them again.

Writing up this listing, and selecting the Youtube video to go with this entry, has actually reminded me how good Draconian Times is as an album. Time to start putting that back on to my current playlists 🙂
