GIG 294 : Alisha’s Attic – SW1, 20th June 1996

This one was kind of a ‘work do’, as we’d been invited along by Polygram to a showcase of a new band they were backing in a big way called Alisha’s Attic. The SW1 club had been booked out for the industry event and free drinks were flowing. Upon entry we were all given a little bag which contained some info about Alisha’s Attic as well as a cassette, in a very pink fluffy zipped case, which included their forthcoming single “I Am, I Feel” and possibly another couple of tracks. I still have it somewhere.

Alish’a Attic comprised of two sisters Shelley and Karen, and their label backing certainly paid off. Their debut single got a load of radio play and reached number 14 in the UK Charts, and was also a hit across many European countries. Their second single, “”Alisha Rules the World” got to number 12 and their debut album (produced by Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics) was released in November, got to #14 in the album charts, and eventually went Platnium. That was just the start as over the next five years they had a string of Top 20 UK hits, released a number of albums, and toured with the likes of INXS and Jon Bon Jovi.

But this was their public unveiling.

After milling around making short talk with industry movers and shakers, hangers-on, other record store employees that had been invited, and journalists, the duo took the stage for about a half-hour set if I remember correctly. They were very good, and came and mingled with the assorted crowd after the set.
