I will say this now. Bon Jovi are one of the best live bands I have ever seen.
If you even mildly like Bon Jovi but get the opportunity to go and see them, then do so. You won’t regret it.
This was the first time I saw Bon Jovi and also the first time I’d been to an outdoor gig. Maybe both of these combined to make it such a memorable event. Whatever it was, Bon Jovi rocked.
I consider 1989 an absolute classic time for the band, Slippery When Wet was only a few years old and New Jersey had only recently been released, so their set was full of tracks which were already classics – and combining some of their earlier material (such as the brilliant ‘Runaway’) and also having a couple of special guests appear for a track or two (Steven Tyler and Joe Perry from Aerosmith) didn’t hurt them any either.
Support came in the form of Europe (Final Countdown), Vixen and Skid Row (Youth Gone Wild/ 18 and Life) – all of whom were really good.
The most expensive gig I’d been too (£16.50 for a ticket and £5.15 for a return ticket between London and Milton Keynes) it was definitely money well spent!
