Ever since 2010 I’ve kept track of the music I listen to each month. It’s fascinating to see how some bands stay with me over the years whilst others have their moment on my stereo before vanishing from my mind… well, until years later when I check out to see what I was listening to way back when in any case!

Anyway, I ran a Top 50 (which turned in to a Top 100) bands of the month chart on various social media platforms recording my listening habits for posterity and to share my earworms of the month. I listen to a lot of music when working, and also when relaxing. My tastes are fairly broad and I love discovering new bands, as well as new sounds and genres.

March saw 12 new entries hit my Top 100 for the first time. Leading that pack are Spanish Industrial outfit Dame Area at 11. New York fantasy metal band slayed their way into the top 20 at 16 and the much more mellow Michael Kiwanuka also getting in the Top 20 at 19. Industrial supergroup, The Joy Thieves entered at 24 and were joined in the Top 30 by Northern Irish post-punk outfit Chalk (27) and 60’s psychedelic band 13th Floor Elevators (30). Industrial Alt-Pop was a theme for me in March with Ms*Gloom (37) also joining the new entries. At 52 is another band that I suspect will stay around my charts for a while, Kiss Facility – a shoe-gaze/dream-pop band that blends a lot of Middle Eastern influences and sing in Arabic. The other new enteries this month were The Clockworks at 69 (who I think may be breaking my top 30 next month as I’ve been playing them a lot), Paul Revere & The Raiders at 75, Ali Farka Toure at 88 and The Who at 96.

There were also 17 re-entries this month, with Snakes of Russia sneaking back in to the Top 10 at 10. Some of the other re-enteries included The Raveonettes (20), The Last Shadow Puppets (35), Diary of Dreams (38), The Pretty reckless (44), Yeah Yeah Yeahs (53), Iron Maiden (60), David Bowie (89) and Nirvana (92).

Several of March bands have appeared courtesy of the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die book group I’m in, where one random album is selected from the book each day for us to listen to and review. Some have been great – either new finds or beloved classics – others less so. But it has meant that a few of those artists have started appearing in the monthly Top 100s.

This month is also only the second time that Enigma have not featured in my Top 100 since I started doing this back in 2010. The one, and only time until now, that they missed out charting was January 2016. Will they return next month? Who knows… I’ve not listened to them so far and we’re already a couple of weeks in to April as I write this so it’s not looking overly promising!
