Everything. You. Need.

  • To play historical a historical or fantasy campaign using Stara Szkola Rules.
  • To play a hybrid campaign with historical characters in a fantasy realm
  • To develop or adapt your own fantasy or hybrid setting

The year is 1517, and you are about to enter a new world. You are standing near a small town on the banks of the Rhine, before a cave entrance in a hill, along with about two hundred other people and a collection of horses, carts, and wagons. This is the most recent expedition in a long series about to embark into a land so strange and uncanny, that it is beyond anything you have experienced, or any of your ancestors dreampt of, going back countless generations.

The members of your expedition are a diverse group including men and women of every estate. You can hear an array of languages – German in four or five distinct dialects, French in at least three, English, Italian, Polish, Czech, Catalan, some others you don’t recognize. These people, with their many fine horses, and carts laden with cargo, stand ready for a long and strange journey into a land weirder than any of them ever imagined.

Elegantly dressed diplomats with rapiers on their hip and servants by their side; humble pilgrims with staves and little badges on their hats; hardy explorers and prospectors leading mules with all kinds of gear; young merchants in fur coats, and swords on their belt, carefully inspecting wagons piled high with valuable merchandise; couriers with their pouches and their daggers; students; journeymen; peasants; friars and nuns. Almost every walk of life is here.

The caravan guard are hard-eyed, bearded mercenaries in battered, blackened armor. They lean patiently on halberd and arquebus, muttering to each other, smiling here and there. They’ve been through the portal many times already. Experienced knights in gothic harness chat in their saddles, sharing flagons of wine, clustered in little groups of four or five horsemen, each preparing to transition from the familiar world of Latinized Europe, into a realm of fantastic opportunity and unfathomable peril: An entirely new world called the Nebelwelt.

Drum and Pike: The Fog World is a new sourcebook for Stara Szkola, designed to allow players and GMs to access Fantasy genres while using the historically based combat system Codex Integrum is known for, and if they want to, play carefully researched historically based characters in a fantasy setting. This book is divided into two sections: Drum and Pike, which covers historical characters and rules for gaming in early 16th Century Europe, and The Fog World, which covers rules and setting material for playing in a range of fantasy realms.

What this book is for

This sourcebook has two parts, Drum and Pike, and The Fog WorldDrum and Pike is an SSk historical setting book set in the medieval world, this time focused on the military realm, with rules for new Vocations like Knights and Landsknechts, and setting information for the Rhineland in the early 16th Century. It is similar to our previous historical Supplement for SSk, Streets of the Fencing Master, except that it is set sixty years later in time.

Part two of this book, The Fog World, was written for players of Stara Szkola or Codex Integrum who want to run games within the fantasy genre, and specifically for those who want to play any game in which historical characters can interact with fantasy monsters, magic, NPCs, settings, and situations. Like within underground complexes…

To merge these two worlds, this is a hybrid setting which allows historical characters from early 16th Century Europe to explore fantasy worlds. You can use Drum and Pike to play games in 16th Century Europe, or you can use the hybrid setting we created, or enter a fully fantasy setting using the Fog World rules. Hack the setting to be more to your own liking and play that, or simply rely on the new rules and random tables here as guidelines to write your own adventures… Convert your favorite fantasy adventures or settings from other RPG systems for use with SSk.
