System Agnostic Generators for Modern Horror and Dark Urban Fantasy Roleplaying by Bright Sun Games
You pass a stranger on the street at night, their eyes locked on their phone screen. At the moment you pass each other, they snap their head up to lock eyes with you. Their piercing gaze fills you with a nervous tension, and time slows to a crawl. What happens next? In real life, they are probably just another stranger in the night, but in a modern horror setting, they might be a young vampire looking for their first kill. These kinds of encounters are the core of modern horror and modern fantasy, making the familiar into the strange.
Stranger Nights is a system-agnostic set of multi-table generators and random tables for lovers of urban horror and dark urban fantasy roleplaying. This book collects 75 pages of random generators and supporting tables to enhance any modern horror or dark modern RPG.
Stranger Nights is the fourth installment in my series of system-agnostic books of random generators. These generators are composed of multiple tables that combine to create a final product. The results of the generators are generic enough to be useful in most situations but specific enough to significantly ease the mental burden on the GM. The final product of each generator is designed to be intriguing and sometimes unintuitive to spark creativity. Unique results are almost guaranteed; a generator composed of 6 tables, each with 10 lines, can produce 1 million unique combinations.
This book covers everything from meddling teenage NPCs to cursed artifacts to government codenames. Each page is entirely self-contained; no page references any information from other pages. Some pages might benefit by combining results across sections, but all necessary results are contained on each page.
Each page comes with a small paragraph explaining potential results and uses for that page’s contents, and each section contains several examples made from that section’s generators.
This book is more than just a book of random tables, it is a creative tool made by a serial GM with years of experience running, theorizing, making, and playing games across genres and systems. The generators within this book can be used during gameplay or game prep. It can be a valuable tool even if you are just playing with potential game ideas or are a designer making new game content. No matter when you use it, Stranger Nights is sure to take your game to the next level.
