As the Appearance of Horses

RuneQuest / Glorantha Campaign by Jonstown Compendium / Chaosium

Pavis is under siege by a countless horde, an immortal horde…

Emerging from the corrupt heart of the Wastes, a huge swarm of locusts covers Pavis County, devouring crops and isolating the city under a rustling dome.

Only the power of the Founder keeps the invader at bay. But for how long?

In the greenish darkness that smothers the city, fear and despair grip the population, and while rituals and processions implore the mercy of gods locked in their eternal struggle, the ambitions of the powerful run wild…

Will the heralds of the scourge be able to identify the origin of the locust plague and put an end to it?

As the Appearance of Horses will take adventurers from New Pavis to the heart of the Wastes in search of an answer to the Exodus of the Elytra.

This lengthy campaign (162 pages, plus a 49-page booklet for NPCs) is organised into two parts. In the first, the adventurers investigate the nature and origin of the locust plague, exploring the temples and sewers of New Pavis, negotiating with the troll clans and the Garden, and fighting in the deadly ruins of the Big Rubble to retrieve vital intelligence. The second part provides rules and information on organising expeditions in the Wastes and will lead adventurers on a trail whose secrets they will have to unravel, confronting them with the ambition of a delusional Broo warlord and a ruthless nomadic war, until they sail beyond the pale of Time on a long-dead ship.

Along the way, they will meet a young Orlanthi slave and help shape the destiny of the Liberator who will bring an end to the Third Age.

NOTE: the default setting of the campaign is ca. 1615 to respect the chronology of Argrath’s career, but the Argrath story arc can be discarded to play in 1625+ without problem. Although all the necessary information is provided in this book, the game will greatly benefit from the use of two official publications providing background material: Glorantha Classics 1 – Pavis and Big Rubble (Chaosium) and/or Pavis: Gateway to Adventure (Moon Design Publications), as well as the six volumes of Pavis and Big Rubble Companion: Director’s Cut, the magnum opus of Ian A. Thomson and friends (Jonstown Compendium).
