Zothique is the creation of Clark Ashton Smith (1893–1961), one of fantasy’s great visionaries, alongside H.P. Lovecraft, Lord Dunsany, and Robert E. Howard. A poet, painter, and author of macabre tales, Smith imagined Zothique as the last continent beneath a dying sun — a world where sorcery has supplanted science, forgotten gods stir, and civilizations linger in opulence and decay upon the bones of countless ages.

It is a realm of decadence, doom, and sorcery. Kingdoms rise and fall amid deserts and black seas; necromancers and kings struggle for fleeting dominion; and beauty is ever shadowed by ruin. In Smith’s vision, Zothique is not merely a backdrop but a character itself.

Zothique prefigured the Dying Earth subgenre later explored by Jack Vance and Gene Wolfe, and its influence runs deep in modern role-playing games. Above all, Zothique is Earth’s final dream — a twilight stage where every tale bears the weight of centuries, and the fatal allure of the world’s end.
