Morkin: The Lords of Midnight Solo Adventure Game

Solo Adventure Game by Juan Diaz-Bustamante

Morkin: The Lords of Midnight Solo Adventure Game is a single-player fantasy tabletop adventure, inspired by The Lords of Midnight — the epic strategy and adventure game created by Mike Singleton and first released for the ZX Spectrum in 1984.

You will step into the role of Morkin as he embarks on his quest to destroy the Ice Crown. Played on a hexagonal map, the game blends role-playing elements with strategic exploration and adventure. All you need to play Morkin is the book, a pencil, an eraser, a few dice — and your imagination.

Some features of the game includes:

  • A comprehensive 290-page book, featuring rules, a bestiary, a highly detailed hexagonal map, and an abundance of events, side quests, and gameplay tables.
  • High-quality artwork in a distinctive OSR style, created by Miguel R.Mata.
  • A character sheet for Morkin, showing his attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Charisma) and 16 skills, allowing you to tailor his traits to your play style. Improve Morkin’s attributes and skills as you gain experience throughout the game.
  • An Adventure Sheet to track the calendar, Ice Fear level, weather conditions, and a dedicated battle board.
  • Over 170 events and side quests to immerse you in the world.
  • Dungeon exploration with ruins and caverns, where you’ll map out rooms as you discover them.
  • Different Sites with possible events, encounters, and actions to take… (for example, in a village, you may buy and sell items, rest at an inn, trigger an event, have an unpleasant encounter, etc…). There are citadels, keeps, towers, henges, villages, snowhalls, lakes, liths, caverns, and ruins scattered across the map.
  • Advanced travel mechanics, including a calendar, dynamic weather, orientation, camping, foraging, hunting, fishing, and more.
  • Recruitable companions to join your journey, inspired by the original game.
  • An advanced combat system using dice rolls for special attacks, strategic decision-making, unique enemy moves, critical hits, fumbles, and more.
  • Condition mechanics — such as Hunger, Fatigue, Poisoning, and Bleeding — to enhance realism and challenge.
  • A variety of unique items to buy, sell, or acquire from enemies.
  • Over 30 enemy types, including Doomdark’s troops and followers, Skulkrin, Ice Trolls, and Dragons.

How the game works

Your task is to travel north alone in search of the Ice Crown, the source of the eternal winter that grips the land of Midnight — and to destroy it. Along your journey, you will traverse forests, downs, and mountains, pass through villages, explore forgotten ruins and caverns filled with unexpected foes and side quests, recruit companions, discover ancient towers that echo with guiding voices, and encounter characters who may aid you… or hinder you.

You will begin by creating your character, Morkin. To do this, you will have a character sheet where you can decide which of the available attributes you wish to enhance. There are four Attributes: Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Charisma.
You also have eighteen Skills: Animal Handling, Athletics, Camp, Defence, Disarm Traps, Endurance, First Aid, Fishing, Foraging, Hunting, Lock Picking, Might, Melee, Mental Toughness, Orientation, Perception, Persuasion, and Stealth.
Additionally, there are eleven Masteries: Weapon Master, Shield Master, Scout, Ranger, Locksmith, Animal Trainer, Medic, Harvester, Hunter, Pathfinder, and Shadowstalker.

The game is played in turns, with each turn representing a day, and each day divided into four quarters. You have 30 days to complete your mission. If you do not succeed in destroying the Ice Crown within this time, you will lose, as Doomdark’s armies — bolstered by their overwhelming numbers and the Ice-Fear emanating from the Crown — will have conquered Midnight.

Each quarter of the day, you may choose one action: you can Approach an NPC, Camp (only at night), Fish, Forage, Hunt, Rest, Seek, or Travel. You will also need to take the weather into account, as it will affect your actions, as well as the current level of Ice-Fear.

When you arrive at a Ruin or a Cavern, you can explore it, generating the dungeon map as you go. Each one will always be tied to a Quest that you must complete while exploring it—such as rescuing a prisoner, recovering an item, killing a specific enemy, etc.

Morkin uses dice to determine the outcome of various actions and situations you may encounter. Typically, you will use a D100 to resolve most actions, comparing the result against the relevant skill.
