The Scarlet Citadel

A Sword and Sorcery Classic Adapted for Fantasy RPGs by Hexplore Publishing

The Lion strode through the halls of Hell;

Across his path grim shadows fell

Of many a moving, nameless shape

 Monsters with dripping jaws agape.

The darkness shuddered with scream and yell

When the Lion stalked through the halls of Hell.

Robert E. Howard

Welcome to The Scarlet Citadel, a sword & sorcery dungeon crawl adventure, inspired by a classic Robert E. Howard story, which is featured in full-text at the end of the book. The PCs must descend into the deadly dungeon beneath the Scarlet Citadel, lair of a deranged sorcerer, to rescue their imprisoned king before it’s too late. Ensure none of your players know the original story to avoid spoilers. This is a typical dungeon crawl, filled with lethal traps, ruthless monsters, and horrors beyond comprehension.

About this Adventure

The Scarlet Citadel is designed for 4 to 6 characters of levels 3 to 5 and it’s fully compatible with D&D B/X, Old-School Essentials, and easily adapted to other OSR games, including our own rules-light RPG, Delver.

A Note About the Adaptation

The Scarlet Citadel stays true to the original story while reshaping its linear narrative into a dynamic TTRPG adventure. Adjust it as needed to better suit your group — it’s your game, after all.

The Scarlet Citadel is available through DriveThruRPG in PDF.
