Usurper 2. Procedural Fantasy Roleplaying
by Nordic Weasel Games
Welcome to Usurper.
Usurper is a fantasy adventure game of quick and fun adventure. Using a simple universal table to resolve most actions on, the game allows for various degrees of success, random events and unexpected outcomes without any complicated math.
Characters are described in plain English terms rather than lists of numbers and modifiers and can be created to taste in a matter of minutes with a notepad, however we also offer a really fun random character creation process for players who prefer to be surprised during creation.
Usurper is meant to scale up and down. You can spend your campaign delving into fetid dungeons or you can overthrow kingdoms and lead armies. All supported by the tools we offer.
Speaking of tools, we have jammed the book full of them. Whether you need to generate the history of your campaign world, build a city with rival factions to play in or a magical item, there are story-driving random tables to help you get going.
In terms of mechanical inspiration, Usurper borrows from legacies as diverse as FATE, OSR gaming, Swedish culture games and Rolemaster.
Other featuers include:
*A game system that will result in your characters changing unpredictably as they adventure. The person that comes back to their home town is never going to be the same person that left.
*Tables covering ill fortunes such as physical injuries, gruesome deaths, mental trauma and sanity loss if that is the type of game you want to pursue.
*Follower and henchmen rules, including loyalty, morale, recruitment.
*NPC’s and monsters will fit on an index card.
*Random NPC generator, including motivations and relationships.
*World building systems with random generators for world history, city factions, quests, terrain and dungeon themes.
*Travel and random encounter tables.
*Tables to conduct a living, unpredictable campaign with random events and outcomes.
*Adventure system that adjudicates the progress of the heroes when fighting to bring down an enemy, overthrow a system or change the world.
*Random monster and magic item tables.
*Narrative magic system.
*Random deities with an active interest in their followers.
*Lead armies into battle, treating each unit as a character in its own right.
*Rule a domain.
*Being eaten by a monster.
* * * * *
Usurper is also extremely solo friendly as it can be used to generate much of a scenario. Combine it with an oracle of your own choice and you can easily adventure for hours using the systems on offer. As a bonus for solo players, it is quite easy to manage multiple characters, since you do not have to keep track of long character sheets with 20+ skills on them.
Additionally many of the tools can be used to simply watch a world unfold before you as a dice game, or played as a strategy-lite domain game particularly for solo gamers.
Many players also found the original edition to be extremely useful when used in conjunction with other RPG systems, for example to help build quick fantasy cities or come up with weird monsters.
This 2nd edition has been updated by Bill Hamilton to make the writing clearer and easier to understand, some rules that were a bit awkward have been changed and everything should be more user friendly.
The release version is offered for a reduced price, as it lacks illustrations and flavour text stories. Think of it as a pre-order except you get the entire game up front.
