Claudia Christian’s Musketeers vs. Cthulhu

Musketeers vs. Cthulhu is a 112-page, A5-sized hardback book and includes a full Musketeer vs. Cthulhu campaign and everything needed to play Musketeers in any Call of Cthulhu setting.

The Three Musketeers is a French historical adventure written in 1844 by Alexandre Dumas, and the swashbuckling story is legend, having been presented in almost every form of media including board game, cartoon, comic book and Hollywood movies.

Created by writer H. P. Lovecraft, the Cthulhu Mythos was first introduced in 1928 in the short story ‘Call of Cthulhu’. Cthulhu is now a shared fictional universe, where numerous authors and creators have developed the mythos further with different monsters and horrors, in all manner of times and locations. In their short story, as part of The Musketeers vs. Cthulhu in the Court of King Louis Anthology, Claudia and Chris have melded the swashbuckling of The Three Musketeers legend with the horror of the Cthulhu Mythos. A perfect setting for a tabletop roleplaying book, we think you’ll agree.

Take Up Arms Against the Cthulhu Mythos!

Chapter 1: L’Affaire du Possion Rouge is the first act of the campaign, in which the Musketeers become involved in the schemes of both Hasteur and His Eminence the Cardinal, Duke of Richelieu and Fronsac. Both are seeking an individual who, in turn, is seeking out the Musketeers for assistance in rescuing his daughter.

Chapter 2: The House of Hasteur dives right into the action, with the Musketeers entering the House of Hasteur. This act sets in motion the terrifying chain of events of that await the Musketeers in the next two chapters.

Chapter 3: The Courtyard of Miracles sees the Musketeers learning more about Hasteur’s Court of Chaos, and they even receive an audience with His Majesty. This act may be combat-heavy, but there are ways for careful Musketeers to avoid armed conflicts. Another Mythos-aligned faction makes an appearance as well.

Chapter 4: Nuit d’Apocalpse! sees panic and mayhem in the streets as the Musketeers must take their charge to the Seine near Notre-Dame, dodging the Cardinal’s Guard and worse. Far worse. Will they save Paris and thwart the machinations of the Cardinal and an Elder God? And even if they do…will they, could they, in turn, be seduced by the eldritch powers they just fought against?

Appendix I: The Musketeers deals with the heroes at the center of the story: Musketeers (aka, the player characters)! This chapter adds the Musketeer occupation and adds to the character creation process found in Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu Keeper Rulebook. Additional occupations are provided as well, all in the flavor of Paris in 1624. Rules for a single Keeper and just one or two Musketeers can be found in this appendix, as can period-specific weapons, fighting styles, and rules for new combat manuevers…manuevers fit for the swashbuckling, back-and-forth, cinematic fights befitting the Musketeers! Lastly, “the” Musketeers, Aramis, Athos, Porthos, and d’Artagnan, are written up and statted out.

Appendix II: Allies, Rogues, & Villains is a gallery of rivals and rogues. Many are ordinary Parisians, unused to the horrors that are to come.

Appendix III: Diabolical Fiends has stats for the creatures of the Cthulhu Mythos that one is likely to encounter in Musketeers vs. Cthulhu.

Appendix IV: Dramatis Personae gives stats for all of the major players in the drama, both human and…otherwise.

Appendix V: The Grimoirecovers two new Mythos Tomes that are featured in the campaign.

  • The Esuugat Tablets
  • The Third Key of Solomon

Appendix VI: La Vie Parisienne provides three d100 tables to assist Keepers in fleshing out the Paris of Louis the XVIII’s world. The tavles provide random events, conversations Musketeers hear in the background, and even Mythos-relate occurrences. A character sheet and an index finish out the book after this chapter.

All for One and One for All!

Join the ranks of the Musketeers as they face off against eldritch plots and courtly intrigues. The time has come for daring deeds against impossible foes.
