GIG 365: Massive Attack – Brixton Academy – 24th April 1998

Massive Attack had just released their third studio album, “Mezzanine”, at the start of the week and were playing Bixton Academy as part of a UK tour in support of the album. So Delphine and I headed south of the river to check them out.

I’d been a fan of Massive Attack for a few years, having got both their debut “Blue Lines” (1991) and “Protection” (1994) on pretty regular rotation. Mezzanine was a great album, and became probably my favourite of theirs, so I was very eager on catching them for the first time.

Unfortunately something just didn’t gel with me at this gig. They were ‘good’, but I didn’t think they were ‘great’. Perhaps my expectation was too high going in, but whilst I did enjoy the concert it wasn’t anything special. Thankfully I have Massive Attack since and enjoyed them more, but it was a bit of a disappointment. Atleast the Mezzanine album kicked arse!
