GIG 353: Whitby Gothic Weekend Day 1 – Inkubus Sukkubus / Manuskript / Psycho TV – Whitby, 31st October 1997

Whitby Goth Weekend started in 1994 but this was the first (and only) time I managed to attend the event. I set off from London with a couple of friends, Michelle and Jeff, at 9am with Michelle driving. It’s a long way from London to Whitby, especially across the North York Moors in the autumn. The trip took us just over six hours and after checking in to our hotel and freshening up we headed to a local pub to meet up with a load of other friends and then off to Whitby Pavilion a couple of hours later to see the first night of bands.

Opening act Psycho TV were the only band I hadn’t seen before – and not to be mistaken for Psychic TV. I have no idea who they were but they seem to have released a cassette EP they recorded themselves. I thought they were terrible.

Manuskript was a band I enjoyed live and had seen three times before. The last time (GIG 343) had been in the summer and they’d been great. Sadly I felt they were a bit off here though- they were good, but certainly not as good as I knew they could be.

For headliners Incubus Sukkubus this was my (un)lucky 13th time seeing them live, and my first in a year since I saw them at the Pagan Federation Festival afterparty (GIG 310). Thankfully although it was my 13th time it was not unlucky – as they played a great set and were a wonderful way to finish off the live portion of the night before the late night DJs continued to keep us all on the dancefloor.
