GIG 335: Sparrowman – The Turrets, 14th June 1997

Sparrowman were a mates band. Gunther was doing a music degree at Westminster University, which had spawned a few bands such as Morcheeba which he also knew. His band was very much much in the rock category, which was fine for most of the Barnet/Finchley crowd who knew him.

A bunch of us went to The Turrets, a weird looking pub in Frien Barnet that was built in 1887 and demolished in 2013. It had a function room on the first floor which was the venue for the evenings shenanigans.

Sparrowman were actually very good, and we had a great time. I’m surprised the band didn’t go further than selling demo tapes at the gigs. I think I still have one somewhere… although not sure I have a cassette player anymore that I could play it on.

Gunther went into artist management after he graduated and I’m not sure he plays live anymore. I managed to catch Sparrowman a couple of times in 1997 and thoroughly enjoyed both gigs.
