GIG 329: Marilyn Manson / Pist*On – Brixton Academy, 20th May 1997

Marilyn Manson’s “Dead To The World” tour returned to London in all it’s pomp and glory. Still supporting their 1996 release, “Antichrist Superstar”, I’d seen their first ever UK performance the previous December (GIG 312) when they first passed through. That gig had eventually been at The Forum in Kentish Town, but the band had gotten bigger and more attention since then so this time they were playing a sold out Brixton Academy.

The support band was Pist*On, whom I’d seen in April at the Camden Palace (GIG 323). I hadn’t been overly impressed by them then (although having recently listened to some of their tracks I’m not sure why I wasn’t keen) and ended up missing them here due to meeting friends in a pub beforehand. A shame in hindsight as I’d quite like to have given them another shot.

Marilyn Manson (comprised at the time of Mariln Manson, Zim Zum, Twiggy Ramirez, Madonna Wayne Gacy, and Ginger Fish) were a force of nature. I’d enjoyed them at The Forum (although not as much as I possibly could have done due to some external factors at the time) but here they really commanded the stage and mesmerized the audience. Song after blasted song whipped the crowd up, and they were utterly fantastic. The setlist was pretty similiar to the one back in December (they did only have two albums out at this point) but they ended up playing a slightly longer 18 track set than the 16 track one at The Forum.

Fantastic gig and another contender for gig of the year.
