GIG 324: Project Pitchfork / Chaos Engine – The Underworld, 3rd April 1997

Project Pitchfork had become one of my favourite bands so I was thrilled when they accounced a gig at The Underworld in Camden. Only a few stops on the tube and one of my favourite venues. It was a Thursday night, and a friends (Banshee) birthday, although he didn’t come to the gig but a bunch of us walked down the road afterwards to the Devonshire Arms to join him in his celebrations.

The support band were a band called Chaos Engine, a British Industrial outfit from Cheltenham. They were three months away from the launch of their debut album, “Difficult”, and were touring quite a bit. I certainly saw their name and logo appearing all over the place, although this was the first time I got to see them live. They were very good live and really impressed me. Enough that I got their album when it was released.

Project Pitchfork, from Germany, had been around since 1989 and had released their sixth album, Chakra:Red, in January. I loved them, and Chakra:Red is a superb album that is still one of my favourite industrial albums of all time. They completely blew me away live, and were easily up there in the best live bands I saw in 1997 (and they had stiff competition this year).
