I’d just seen Gravity Kills headline The Garge a couple of days before this gig, but was now south of the river down in Brixton to see them again, this time supporting Skunk Anansie.
Surprisingly this was the first time I was seeing Skunk Anansie live. I’d met them a year or so earlier at their album launch at the One Little Indian offices. I think it was for their second album, ‘Stoosh’, as that came out in 1996. I was very keen on finally seeing them live… although tonight ended up not being the best opportunity for me to do so as it turned out…
Gravity Kills came on and they had a small, but very energetic, following in attendance and the frotn of the stage became a mini-moshpit pretty quickly. I made the rookie mistake of deciding to crowd surf, although realistically there wasn’t really enough people to carry anyone properly or safely as the crowd density was too thin. That said, the crowd that was did carry me all the way to the barrier without me vanishing into a hole and landing on the ground. It was when I reached the barrier the problem arose. It wasn;t a smooth journey between crowd and security guards as I fell through a gap at the front as I was being carried over and my shin hit the metal barriers hard.
I returned to the mosh pit but my shin was really hurting so I ended up having to retreat. The front of my jeans around my shin were sticky and it was obvious I’d taken a bad knock.
I ended up watching the rest of Gravity Kills set (they were ace) and managed to see part of Skunk Anansie’s before having to call it a night and go home. When I finally peeled the jeans off me I had a nasty gash along the front of my shin. Nothing that really needed hospital treatment, but it certainly stung for a few days.
Loved Gravity Kills again, but would have to wait a little while longer to properly see and appreciate Skunk Anansie.
