This had been a gig I’d been waiting for for over two years. I’d seen Type O Negative back in September 1994 at The Underworld (GIG 184) at what I think was their first ever UK gig. They’d blown me away live and I loved their albums. Having to wait two years to see them again was a pain, but it gave them time to grow in popularity and jump up a few venue sizes to now be playing The Astoria on Charing Cross Road.
Support came in the form of Moonspell. a Portuguese gothic metal band that was getting some attention at the time – and who were great live. I’d never seen them before but they blew me away here and were one of the better support bands I’d seen. I remember loving their “The Butterfly Effect” album a few years later in 1999 and writing this entry have realised I should probably jump on Spotify and give myself a refresher on them and also listen to their more recent albums (the last of which was “Hermitage” in 2021.
Type O Negative where touring on the back of “October Rust” their fourth studio alumb that had been released in the summer. The album was full of great tracks – “Love You To Death”, “Cinnamon Girl”, and the massively popular “My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend” just being three that immediately spring to mind.
Type O had a lot to live to for me. Their gig back in ’94 was one of the best gigs I’d ever been to! Well, with another fantastic support band on the same bill, they had a fantastic start and Pete Steele and the other Type O guys once again blew me away. Absolutely fantastic night.
