#RPGaDAY2023 Day 6 – Favourite Game You Never Get To Play

Welcome to #RPGaDAY2023! Now in its tenth year, #RPGaDAY was originally created by RPG author and games designer David Chapman (Conspiracy X, Doctor Who, etc) as a bit of fun and to get people talking about tabletop roleplaying games. August was chosen, I believe, to coincide with tabletop roleplaying’s gaming mecca that is Gen Con – which usually takes place in the States (Inidanapolis these days) every August.

#RPGaDAY is open to everyone so if you want to join in just check out the prompts below to inspire a blog, vlog, or social media post to celebrate everything great about our hobby with the tag #RPGaDAY2023

Day 6: Favourite Game You Never Get To Play

There could be a long list of contenders here given I don’t get to play RPGs in general as much as I’d like to. Certainly not when you consider we had several campaigns – and one-shots – on the go at any time back in the 80’s and 90’s.

The one I’m going to pick though is TSR’s Marvel Super Heroes Advanced Set. It was a game I ran for years back in the 80’s and early 90’s. We created so many fantastic characters, and teams, and I merged characters from Marvel and DC, and later Image and a number of Independant comics, in to one shared world with a massive timeline – I still have the Excel sheets with all the info on that I managed to update from a very old file a few years ago!

I’m partially choosing Marvel Super Heroes, not only because it is one of my all-time favourite games and systems, but also because even when it was getting regular play I was often the Gamesmaster, so wasn’t actually managing to play myself. We did have some rotation in the GM’ing department – so I did have characters who were members of the various teams we played – but a lot of time they ended up being either NPC’d or off doing something else while the rest of the team were getting themselves into all kinds of trouble.

I would love to get Marvel Super Heroes game up and going again. It’s something that keeps cycling round but never seems to actually happen. I know that the chances are I’d be the one running it though – which I’m totally fine with – but I’d love to be able to play a game.
