GIG 309: Rosetta Stone / MESH / The Horatii / Leechwoman / Inertia – Astoria, 10th November 1996

I’d initailly brought a ticket for this all-dayer because The Nefilim were headlining. I was a massive fan of Fields of the Nephilim and had seen Carl (lead singers) more thrash-industrial tinged ‘The Nefilim’ once already in May (GIG 288) and had really enjoyed them. So I was looking forward to catching them again. Unfortunetly between buying the ticket and the 10th November rolling round The Nefilim had disbanded so second on the bill Rosetta Stone got promoted to headline act for the night.

This was actually a pretty good lineup and certainly meant that quite a few of us got to The Astoria early afternoon so we’d be able to catch all the bands. I’d seen all the bands on the bill before, apart from MESH so largely knew what I was getting going in. Inertia took to the stage first and were really good. Leechwoman weren’t as good on this occasion as I’d seen them before, and I was also a little disappointed with third band on the bill – The Horatii.

Things really ramped up a number of notches as the evening drew in though, and MESH took to the stage. I’d listened to some MESH before this, but it was this gig that prompted me to pick up an album and I still listen to them every so often today. They were great, and ended up being the best band on the bill on this occasion… and that’s not putting headliners Rosetta Stone down, as they also played a really good set. I just preferred MESH on the night this time round.
